Steve Green - Head Coach - 19th Season
Steve Green begins his 20th season leading the South Plains College Texan basketball team where he has compiled a record of 490 wins and 128 losses.
The three-time NJCAA Men's Basketball National Coach of the Year, Green was inducted into the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on March 16, 2015. Green led the Texans back to the NJCAA Men's Basketball National Tournament for the 10th time during the 2018-2019 season, advancing to the Final Four for the third consecutive season, amassing a 28-6 overall record and captured the Region V Crown for the second consecutive season with a win over No. 7 Odessa in Abilene.
During the 2018 season, The Texans ran the table as they knocked off conference foe No. 2 Odessa College in the Region V title game to earn an automatic berth to the 2018 NJCAA Men's Basketball National Tournament in Kansas. The Texans went on to win five straight in Hutch including a 95-95 victory over Southern Idaho in the NJCAA Div. I Men's National Championship title game to capture the program's third national championship.
At South Plains, Green accomplishments include seven conference titles, seven regional championships, 10 national tournament appearances, and three national titles. In 2012, Coach Green’s team went 36-0, claiming their second NJCAA National Championship, only the sixth time in the history of the NJCAA for a team to attain such perfection. His second national title put him in an elite class with 11 others who have won multiple championships, and in 2008 was when he received his first national title.
He has amassed an overall win-loss record of 644–171, including nine conference titles, nine regional championships, and three national crowns. After assistant coaching stints at the University of Arkansas, Lamar University, and the University of Houston, Green made his NJCAA head-coaching debut at Howard College in 1988. In his three seasons there he produced two WJCAC titles, one regional championship and an overall record of 81-19. From there he guided Midland College to a 73-24 record, a region championship and appearance in the National Tournament garnering an eighth-place finish.
Before his arrival at South Plains in 2000, he served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the San Diego State University Aztecs and then spent one year as an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Green received his Bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Christian College where he played basketball and tennis. He then earned a Master’s degree in Education and Kinesiology from Sul Ross State University.
A native of Miami, Oklahoma, Green played football and basketball at Miami High School, earning All-State honors in both sports while winning a state championship in basketball.
