Bio
Toby Kirk
Assistant Track and Field and Cross Country Coach – Distance
Kirk enters his first season at South Plains College as an assistant coach for track and field and cross country, working primarily with the distance group. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Psychology with a concentration in Counseling at Cameron University, and he earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with a concentration in K-12 Education from Eastern New Mexico University.
Kirk comes to SPC with a wide range of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels. Most recently, he served as the head track and field and cross country coach at Wayland Baptist University from December 2024–May 2025, where he coached 18 national qualifiers, 4 All-Americans, led the men’s team to the 2025 Sooner Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship, and was named the 2025 SAC Men’s Track Coach of the Year. Prior to that, he was the assistant coach for Wayland Baptist from 2023–2024, coaching 10 national qualifiers, 4 All-Americans, and helping guide the men’s cross country team to a 3rd-place finish at the 2024 NJCAA National Championships.
His previous coaching stops include serving as a graduate assistant coach at Cameron University (2022–2023), a volunteer assistant at Eastern New Mexico University (2021–2022), and as an assistant cross country coach at Portales High School (2020–2021).
As a student-athlete, Kirk competed at Eastern New Mexico University from 2017–2021 in cross country and track and field, specializing in the 1500 meters, 3000-meter steeplechase, 5000 meters, and cross country.
