Williams Competes Well Although Bahamian Team Disqualified
The Bahamian team handed Williams the baton with only a slight lead after the first two legs. Williams ran a superb leg and appeared to have blown the race wide open for his country as he handed the baton to the anchor leg with at least a 10 meter lead on the field. The Bahamian anchor faded over the final meters and Belgium snuck up to win the section.
The Bahamas had won a medal in the last four world championship events, silver in the last two, and even though the United States are the heavy favorites, many considered The Bahamas as the only team that could compete with the Americans.
