ROSWELL, N.M. — The No. 18 South Plains College Texans picked up a hard-fought WJCAC road victory Thursday night, defeating New Mexico Military Institute 74–69 to improve to 2–2 in conference play.
South Plains was led by Antallah Sandlin'el, who poured in 27 points and added 5 rebounds, while going a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. Jaylen Colon provided a big lift off the bench with 19 points, and Micah Bell chipped in 12 points and 7 rebounds.
The Texans won the shooting battle, finishing at 35% from the field, 32% from three-point range, and an impressive 87% from the free-throw line. Foul trouble kept NMMI within striking distance, as the Broncos attempted 36 free throws, but SPC stayed composed down the stretch, limited turnovers, and capitalized at the line to close out the game.
Head Coach Patrick "Cinco" Boone praised his team's toughness following the win.
"Really happy for our guys. Conference road wins in college basketball are hard to get and we finally got one. NMMI has always been a tough place to play and we're glad to tough out a win here, especially when we didn't play our best. Our team is making some strides defensively and we lowered our turnovers tonight compared to last week. We'll keep at it and look forward to playing at home on Monday. We need all the help we can get, so please come support our Texans and Lady Texans!"
South Plains will return to the Texan Dome on Monday, January 19th, to host New Mexico Junior College in a Top 20 conference matchup.
