ALPINE — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams wrapped up their second rodeo of the season Saturday, with the Lady Texans placing third overall at the Sul Ross State University Rodeo at the S.A.L.E Arena.
The Lady Texans totaled 180 points, led by Madison Neal who won the goat tying event. Texas Tech won the women's division with 235, with Vernon College placing second with 195 points. The Texans placed seventh with 190 team points, with Western Texas College securing the top spot with 485 points.
Neal clocked the top time in the long round with a 6.3, which she followed up with a 6.8 in the finals to finish with a 13.1 average and 180 points. South Plains' Savanah Nelson placed fifth in goat tying, running a 7.0 in the long round and a 7.7 in the finals, notching 40 individual points. Cassidy Weber turned in a third place finish in breakaway roping, running a 2.2 in the long round and a 2.0 in the short go, tallying 90 individual points.
The Texans were represented by Clay Guthrie and Brey Yore in the steer wrestling finals Saturday night, as Guthrie placed third and Yore was seventh overall. Guthrie clocked a 4.4 in the long round and a 4.3 in the finals, picking up 90 points for South Plains. Yore ran a 4.3 in the long go and a 10.2 in the finals, totaling 35 team points. Yore also totaled 25 points for SPC in tiedown roping, placing ninth overall. Kayden Little advanced to the team roping finals for the second straight week, placing seventh on the weekend. Little rode with Jarett Freeman of Weatherford College, as the duo turned in a 5.0 in the long round, but missed in the finals to notch 40 points.
South Plains returns to the arena on Thursday when they travel to Vernon for the Vernon College Rodeo Sept. 30 – Oct. 2.
