Lady Texans Hand Clarendon First Conference Loss, 58-38
South Plains College closed conference play in impressive fashion Thursday night, defeating Clarendon College 58-38 and handing the Bulldogs their first conference loss of the season behind a dominant defensive effort.
CLARENDON, TX - South Plains battled Clarendon in a tightly contested first quarter that ended tied at 11. The Lady Texans then took control in the second quarter, holding the Bulldogs to just three points and building a 21-14 lead at halftime.
The defensive pressure from South Plains continued into the second half. The Lady Texans limited quality looks for Clarendon while finding their rhythm offensively, gradually extending the lead to 20 points by the final buzzer.
South Plains shot 35 percent from the field, 28 percent from three point range and 58 percent from the free throw line. The story of the night, however, was the Lady Texans' defense. Clarendon struggled to find offensive rhythm all game, shooting just 22 percent from the field and 10 percent from behind the arc. The Bulldogs did not connect on a three pointer until the final minutes of the contest.
The Lady Texans controlled the glass with 42 rebounds while adding eight assists and committing 11 turnovers.
Isabel Joao led South Plains with 16 points and 17 rebounds. Dilangue Cruz added nine points, six rebounds and three blocks, while Angelina Joao contributed eight points and four rebounds.
With the win, South Plains finishes conference play tied for second place in a three way tie with New Mexico Junior College and Howard College, all finishing with 10-4 conference records.
The Lady Texans will now await seeding to determine their first round matchup in the Region Tournament next week at Odessa College.
