Lady Texans Fall Late at Howard College, 63-60
A late fourth-quarter surge by Howard College proved to be the difference Thursday night as the South Plains College Lady Texans surrendered a 10-point lead and fell 63–60 in a tightly contested WJCAC matchup on January 29th.
BIG SPRING, TX — The South Plains College Lady Texans suffered a narrow 63–60 road loss to Howard College on January 29th after surrendering a late fourth-quarter lead in a back-and-forth WJCAC conference matchup.
South Plains held control for much of the contest and built a 10-point advantage with 8:50 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Howard responded with an offensive surge down the stretch to pull ahead and secure the win.
The Lady Texans struggled shooting the basketball, finishing the night at 27% from the field, 18% from three-point range, and 60% from the free-throw line. Despite dominating the glass with 52 rebounds, SPC was limited to 13 second-chance points.
Turnovers also played a key role, as South Plains committed 21 turnovers, which Howard converted into 16 points. The contest featured seven ties and five lead changes, highlighting the tightly contested nature of the game.
Isabel Joao delivered a standout performance for the Lady Texans, recording 24 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Maya Braxton-Young added 13 points, six rebounds, two assists, and four steals, while Dilangue Cruz contributed 11 points, six rebounds, one steal, and two blocks.
With the loss, South Plains moves to 4–2 in WJCAC play, currently sitting fourth in the conference standings. The Lady Texans will look to close out the first round of conference play on a strong note when they return home to face Clarendon College, who enters the matchup unbeaten in conference play at 6–0.
