#1 Lady Texans Hold Off Frank Phillips, Improve to 15–1 and 3–0 in Conference
The No. 1 South Plains College Lady Texans celebrated Monday at the Texan Dome, earning a 78–65 victory over Frank Phillips College in their first home conference game of the season. Earlier in the day, the Lady Texans learned they had climbed to the top of the NJCAA rankings, earning the program a No. 1 national ranking.
LEVELLAND, TX — The No. 1 South Plains College Lady Texans celebrated Monday at the Texan Dome, earning a 78–65 victory over Frank Phillips College in their first home conference game of the season. Earlier in the day, the Lady Texans learned they had climbed to the top of the NJCAA rankings, earning the program a No. 1 national ranking.
Fueled by the announcement, SPC came out with energy, jumping to a 12–2 lead in the first four minutes by forcing turnovers and converting at the free-throw line. Angelina Joao set the tone early, scoring nine points in the opening stretch. The Lady Texans closed the first quarter ahead 20–11, with Angelina and Isabel Joao combining for 19 of those points.
South Plains continued to control the game in the second quarter, heading into halftime with a 40–24 advantage.
By the end of the third quarter, two Lady Texans had already recorded double-doubles. Angelina Joao posted 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Isabel Joao added 12 points and 10 boards. SPC pushed its lead to 60–36 entering the final period.
The fourth quarter brought a brief challenge as turnovers allowed Frank Phillips to cut the deficit to 11 points with 1:09 remaining. The Lady Texans regrouped and closed out the game, securing the 78–65 win.
Angelina Joao led all scorers with 27 points and eight rebounds, while Isabel Joao finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Shrouq Amer also reached double figures with 10 points and three rebounds.
South Plains outshot Frank Phillips in every major category, connecting on 40.9% from the field, 30.4% from three-point range, and 68% from the free-throw line. The Lady Texans forced 11 turnovers, scoring six points off those miscues, and dominated the glass with 52 rebounds, leading to 10 second-chance points. SPC's largest lead of the night was 27 points with 8:54 remaining in the game.
With the victory, the Lady Texans improve to 15–1 overall and 3–0 in conference play. They will be off Thursday while the Texans travel to New Mexico Military Institute, before returning to action next Monday at the Texan Dome when they face #8 New Mexico Junior College.
