Double-Double by Canavan Leads SPC to 65-61 Victory over WTC
After falling behind 8-0 early in the first half, the Lady Texans battled back into the game. Upon taking the lead, SPC attempted to take control of the game when they led by 10 points, 30-20. Western Texas did not throw in the towel and the next thing SPC new they trailed by a point, 31-20, though they would respond themselves and end the half with a 12-0 run to go to the locker room with a 32-31 lead.
The second half also featured a game of tug-of-war with both teams fighting back and forth. In the end, the Lady Texans were able to pull out a four point victory, 65-61, to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Including Canavan, who made 9-of-17 shots from the field and 7-of-7 free throws, the Lady Texans had three players score in double figures as Ashley Roberts dropped in 18 andLauren McKinney added 12. Roberts also dished out six assists and picked up three steals.
South Plains College will face New Mexico Junior College Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the second round of the WJCAC pre-conference tournament. New Mexico defeated Salt Lake Community College 62-57 in the second game of day one of the tournament.
