Lady Texans look to defend half marathon as host of championship event
The race will begin and end at the new Mallet Event Center, located at 2320 US Highway 385 just south of Levelland.
In 2011, the Lady Texans tied with Iowa Central Community College with 12 points and swept the top two spots. They return the individual champion, Darroneshia Lott, who recently took top honors at last week's NJCAA cross country championships in Ina, Ill.
The Texan men finished third in 2011.
A school can run as many athletes as they wish, however, they must designate five that make up their team. South Plains has six men and six women on their respective rosters; therefore, one will be competing strictly as an individual and will not count towards a team score. Coaches will declare their team during Friday's coaches meeting.
In addition to the men and women's NJCAA half marathon events, community runs of 10,000-meters and 2-miles are also available for the general public to participate in. Walk-up entries will be available inside the lobby of the Mallet Center. Race day entries are $30 and include a hi-tech t-shirt as well as a ticket for a barbecue meal following the event.
The weather forecast appears to be cooperating as a low of 39 degrees is expected along with a high temperature of 64.
