Texans Torch Western Texas 97-85, Clinch Region Tournament Berth
South Plains College answered an early Western Texas shooting surge with efficiency and firepower of its own, pulling away in the second half for a 97–85 road victory in Snyder to lock up a spot in the Region Tournament.
SNYDER, TX - Western Texas came out firing, knocking down its first four three-point attempts and starting 3-for-3 from the free-throw line in the opening five minutes. But the Texans never blinked. South Plains answered possession for possession, settling in offensively before taking control with one of its most efficient shooting performances of the season.
The Texans were dominant from every area of the floor, shooting 58 percent from the field, 56 percent from beyond the arc and an impressive 93 percent from the free-throw line, connecting on 30 of 32 attempts. That efficiency proved to be the difference as SPC steadily built separation and pushed its largest lead to 14 points with eight minutes remaining.
Keith Richard delivered his best performance of the season, pouring in 32 points while adding three rebounds. Off the bench, Yohandry Ortiz and Zion Pipkin each contributed 16 points, helping fuel a 37-point effort from the Texan reserves.
South Plains controlled the glass with 36 rebounds and added 12 assists as a team. The Texans forced eight Western Texas turnovers, converting them into 11 points, and added nine second-chance points. SPC also tallied 22 points in the paint and eight on the fast break, showcasing a balanced offensive attack.
With the win, South Plains improves to 21–6 overall and 10–4 in conference play, currently tied for third in the standings. The victory also secures the Texans a berth in next week's Region Tournament in Odessa.
The Texans return home Monday, March 2, to host Howard College for Sophomore Night in their final home game of the season before traveling to Clarendon College next Thursday to close out conference play.
