Dwight Smith

Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach

Dwight Smith joins South Plains College after a diverse coaching journey that has taken him across multiple levels of basketball. A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Smith attended Ralston High School, where he helped lead his team to a state championship in 2009. He went on to play collegiately at Colorado State University, graduating in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a minor in Ethnic Studies. During his playing career with the Rams, Smith was part of three postseason teams, advancing to the NIT Tournament once and reaching the NCAA Tournament twice, including a Round of 32 appearance against eventual national champion Louisville.

Following his time at Colorado State, Smith pursued graduate studies at Northern Colorado before beginning his professional career as a project coordinator from 2015–2016. He entered coaching at Adams City High School in Commerce, Colorado, where he led both the JV and Varsity programs during the 2016–2017 season. From there, he joined Eastern Wyoming College (2018–2020), working with both the men’s and women’s teams, before spending several months in Spain in 2020 teaching skill development.

Smith continued his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at McCook Community College (2020–2023) and later at Salt Lake Community College (2023–2024), where he helped the program win the Region 18 Championship and advance to the NJCAA Tournament Round of 16. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at the University of South Dakota during the 2024–2025 season.

He credits his versatility across multiple levels of basketball and his ability to connect with student-athletes as what sets him apart as a coach. Smith chose to join South Plains College because of his belief in Coach Cinco Boone’s vision and his passion for developing athletes in the junior college system.

The son of Rosemary Smith, Dwight’s brother Greggory enjoyed a 10-year professional basketball career overseas.
