Ewin's 32 points leads No. 1 Texans past NMMI 79-59 in Roswell

ROSWELL — Malique Ewin bucketed 32 points for the second time in as many games Monday as the top-ranked South Plains College men's basketball team pounded New Mexico Military Institute 79-59 at the Cahoon Armory.

South Plains improves to 24-0 on the year and 10-0 in the WJCAC and will be back on the floor on Thursday when they play host to Western Texas at 7:30 p.m. at the Texan Dome. The contest will stream live at spctexans.com and admission to the game is free.

Ewin finished 15 of 20 from the field to go along with 13 boards, six assists, and three blocked shots, while Jermahri Hill finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Jalen Hampton poured in 15 points and eight boards, knocking down six of eight shots from the field as South Plains shot 55.7 percent from the floor in the contest.

"Our guys won a game on the road that's been a very tough place to play in recent years," South Plains head coach Hayden Sowers said. "After the first six minutes, I thought we guarded at a championship level, and offensively, we continued to work the ball inside through Malique. Hill has 11 assists through his first two games at point guard, which is tremendous. It was good to see Hampton find his groove again, and now we have to get back to work and focus on Western Texas coming to our place on Thursday."

Jonathan Burroughs led NMMI with 15 points on the offensive end, while Louie Yebra had 12 and Vukasin Minic finished with seven. The Broncos shot 39.7 percent from the field and were nine of 27 from the 3-point line.
