Texans Rout Clarendon 99-67

LEVELLAND— The South Plains College Texans picked up their third consecutive Western Junior College Athletic Conference victory after throttling Clarendon College 99-67 Monday night at the Texan Dome.

Following a 10-0 run from the Bulldogs (13-9, 1-5) to open up the contest, the Texans battled back and went on a 9-4 run of their own to cut Clarendon's lead to 14-9 with 15:24 left in the first half. Justice Green, who finished with 19 points and went 6-for-11 from the floor, tied the game at 17 all after connecting on a 3-pointer from the right wing with 11 minutes on the scoreboard.

South Plains (14-6, 5-2) would go on to take its first lead of the game at the 4:15 mark of the first half when Che Bob stepped in front of a pass on the defensive end and took it the length of the floor for a score, giving the Texans a 29-28 lead.

"Coach stressed moving the ball a lot, and that's what we did tonight," Bob said. "Usually in the Dome, we start off kind of sluggish. But usually midway through the first half, we get going. My teammates found me in the spots that I like to be in, and I just finished the plays."

The Texans would take a 42-30 lead into halftime after Deontae North launched a 3-pointer from behind half court, which found the bucket as time expired.

South Plains would go on to lead by as much as 35 points in the final 20 minutes. The Texans shot over 56 percent from the field in the final frame and knocked down 6 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes.

Bob would finish the game with 20 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and four steals for South Plains, while 6-foot-9 sophomore Marlon Jones racked up 14 points and 11 boards. Deontae North chipped in 11 points and had three steals, while Diamante Langston and Jerron Love each had eight points.

"I thought after we got the shock knocked out of our system, we started playing," South Plains head coach Steve Green said. "Against a really good team, on the road, that 10 to nothing is going to be really hard to overcome.

"I told the guys, right now, if you want to win the league, and you want to win it outright, you can't lose again. I think right now, we still have a chance to control our own destiny, I think. Because I just don't see anybody going through the league undefeated."

The Texans will now host Western Texas College on January 25 at the Texan Dome, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.
