Texans too much for Collin County down the stretch
PLANO, Texas – Sophomore Billydee Williams scored a game high 22 points to lead a contingent of five Texans in double figures, and the South Plains College Texans won another wild game against Collin County, 91-80 on the Cougar's home court.
South Plains (10-0) finished with their best shooting night of the year, making 29-of-55 (.527) shots from the field and nearly shot 50-percent from beyond the arc, making 14-of-30 (.467) attempts.
For the second time in as many games, the Texans outlasted Collin County in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated.
The Texans bolted out to an early nine-point lead, but Collin County (4-5) wasted no time scratching their way back into it in what turned out to be an exciting and hard fought first half.
The Cougars appeared to grab the momentum as the first half was nearing its end.
Trailing by a point, Collin's Stephen Buckner hit a 3 and went on to complete a four-point play after drawing contact from SPC's Cedrick McAfee. Moments later Clayton Jones would briefly give SPC a one-point advantage when he scored is lone points of the night with a 3 at the top of the key.
As the clock ticked past one-minute to play, Emmanuel Omogbo scored the Texans final points of the half, making the score 39-37 in favor of the Texans.
A free throw followed by back-to-back field goals gave Collin a three-point cushion. The latter goal by Tyrone Davis also drew contact from McAfee and he went on to convert the free throw with just over a second to go in the half, sending Collin to the locker room with a four-point lead, 43-39.
The Cougars scored the first bucket of the second half, but the Texans answered with a 6-0 run to tie it up, thanks to back-to-back 3-point goals by Roderick Lawrence who finished with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, all from three-point territory.
With 8:09 remaining on the game clock, the game saw its 12th tie after a 3 by Williams knotted the score up at 68 apiece. This is where the Texans began to shake loose from their opponent.
Sekou Harris found Emmanuel Omogbo in the paint consecutive possessions and the Texans took a four-point lead.
After a 3 by Collin's Stephen Buckner made it a one-point ballgame, the Texans scored six straight on their way to outscoring Collin 15-5 to take a commanding 11-point lead as the game entered its final two minutes.
The Texans would go on to win by the 11-point margin.
In addition to Williams' 22, Ryan Martin recorded his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds; Omogbo was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field and finished with 14 points; Andre Spight scored 13 and Lawrence chipped in with 12, all from beyond the arc.
The Texans return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday when they take on another Region 5 foe in Weatherford College. The Coyotes were 6-6 overall on the season entering Friday's game versus Clarendon College.
