Texans take aim for 40th straight win
They will begin with the Plainsmen of Northeastern JC on Friday at 5 p.m., where South Plains will look to collect their 40th consecutive victory dating back to last season when they finished 36-0 and won the NJCAA national tournament.
South Plains (3-0) is off to a quick start to this season as well, coming off a 102-49 rout of Western Nebraska on Tuesday.
"We got off to a really good start," said Texan head coach Steve Green. "I thought we had a really good game plan against them."
Green can attribute that good start to 6-foot-10 forward Yanick Moreira, who finished the game with 19 points in only 20 minutes.
"He's become a lot more aggressive on the offensive end," Green said. "He has gotten stronger and has more confidence around the basket."
Texan guard Kendahl Amerson also contributed to the romp, scoring 22 points, while also nailing 6-of-10 from 3-point range.
Though the Texans' shooting Tuesday night was impressive, Green cautioned that this is not the same team as last year.
"That is going to be a hit-and-miss thing with us," he said. "We are not going to shoot the ball like we did last year, but neither is anyone else.
"If they will be patient and let the ball touch a four or five man's hands before it goes up they are going to find that they will be shooting what I call 'horse' shots. Instead of having to create for themselves, it is going to be created as a result of teams having to be concerned about our inside."
According to Green, the Texans should have two tough tests ahead of them as Northeastern is usually very competitive within Region IX, and North Lake is coming off a 10-point victory over Tyler College.
Saturday's game against North Lake is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tip. A live video feed as well as live stats will be available for both games at www.spctexans.com.
