Ron Mayberry built one of the most distinguished coaching resumes in junior college and collegiate basketball, amassing more than 800 career victories, including 386 wins at the junior college level. After spending 12 successful years as a high school coach, Mayberry began his collegiate coaching journey in 1976 at Midland College. His career would span celebrated tenures at Odessa College, Wayland Baptist University, Kilgore College, South Plains College, and Howard College.
During his eight seasons at South Plains College, Mayberry compiled an exceptional 212–60 record. His 1991 team held the No. 2 national ranking for the entire season, and his 1992 squad advanced to a fifth-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament.
