LEVELLAND — A catalyst on the sidelines during his first season as an assistant coach for the South Plains College men's basketball program, Trevor Van Tassel looks to build on the momentum from a year ago as he begins his second season as an assistant for the Texans.
Van Tassel coached the Texans to a record of 21-12 during the 2021-22 campaign, as SPC would go on to knock off conference foe Odessa College in the Region V title game and advance to the Sweet 16 of the NJCAA Men's Basketball National Tournament.
"Trevor was a huge part of our Region V Championship team last year and it was a priority of mine to have him continue on with us moving forward," South Plains College head coach Hayden Sowers said. "He is an outstanding coach and a better man who will continue to add a ton of value not only to the program but to the college as a whole."
Prior to his arrival at SPC, Van Tassel spent the previous three seasons as a graduate assistant and assistant coach at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, a Div. II university located in Durant, Oklahoma.
Over three seasons, the Savage Storm posted back-to-back NCAA Central Region Tournament berths and a record of 54-27, advancing to the GAC Conference Tournament all three years, twice earning the number two seed.
Van Tassel coached ten All-Great American Conference selections, led by 2019 All-American and Conference Player of the Year Kevin Buckingham. Prior to his time at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Van Tassel served as an assistant coach at his alma mater Colorado Mesa from 2016-18 after wrapping up his playing career from 2011-2016. During the 2016 season, Van Tassel earned his undergraduate degree in history from Colorado Mesa and completed his master's degree in Sports Administration from Southeastern in 2020.
