LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's basketball program will add a new addition to the sidelines for the upcoming season as head coach Hayden Sowers has announced that Jonathan Jefferson will join the coaching staff for the Texans.
"I am thrilled to join the South Plains College basketball program with coach Sowers," Jefferson said. "I look forward to coaching our student-athletes and helping them grow both academically and on the court."
Jefferson comes to Levelland following a four-year stint with Lawson State Community College, where he served as an assistant coach in the Alabama Community College Conference. During his tenure, Jefferson coached 20 student-athletes who would go on to sign with four-year universities.
Prior to his time in Birmingham, Jefferson served as an assistant coach at Shelton State Community College. During the 2017-18 season, the Buccaneers earned a #10 national ranking, with 10 student-athletes signing with four-year universities. Jefferson has also spent time as a volunteer coach for the NBA G League affiliate New Orleans Pelicans (Birmingham Squadron) during the 2021-2022 season.
"Johnathan is another outstanding addition to the program who comes highly recommended from coaches in the profession," Sowers said. "He is great on the floor with individual workouts and player development, as well as a phenomenal person off the court. I have no doubt he will add a ton of value to the program as a whole and pour into the success of our players."
A native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Jefferson earned his bachelor's degree from Fresno Pacific University in Psychology and a master's degree in Athletic Administration from Concordia University-Irvine.
