South Plains track and field well represented at USTFCCCA regional indoor track awards ceremony

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams were well represented at the USTFCCCA indoor regional track awards ceremony on Thursday in Pittsburg, Kansas.   

Leading the Texans and Lady Texans to a No. 1 and No. 2 national ranking, respectively, South Plains College head track and field coach Erik Vance was named the men's and women's West Region Coach of the Year. Assistant track and field coach Wes Miller was also recognized for his work this season, being tabbed the men's and women's West Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

Heading into the national meet with the top mark in the country in the high jump, sophomore Romaine Beckford was named the West Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year. Holding three top 10 marks nationally, freshman Seydi Sall was named the West Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year.

On the women's side, freshman Rosemary Chukwuma earned West Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year honors. Chukwuma currently ranks second nationally in the women's 60 meters and fourth in the women's 200 meters. Sophomore All-American Onaara Obamuwagun was named the West Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year, posting the top mark in the country this season in the triple jump and also ranks seventh nationally in the long jump.

The Texans and Lady Texans will wrap up the indoor season this weekend at the 2021 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas.
