LEVELLAND — Ranked first and second in the country respectively, the South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams will compete for national gold March 5-6 at the 2021 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.
The Texans, who come in as the top-ranked team in the latest USTFCCCA national rankings have acquired 23 national top-10 marks to date, including three of the top marks in the country to date. The Lady Texans earned a No. 2 national ranking in the most recent national rankings, and have accumulated 22 national top-10 marks.
Romaine Beckford enters the weekend as the national leader in the men's high jump, clearing 7' 2.5" as the ASU Indoor/Outdoor on Feb 6. Sophomore Khaleb McRae is the national leader in the men's 600 meters, posting the nation's top time in 1:17.41. The Texans also posted the top 4x400 relay time on Feb. 22 in Levelland, clocking a 3:09.75.
"We were never sure if we were actually going to get here," South Plains head coach Erik Vance said. "It came down to some-pre travel testing, and we still didn't know if we were going to get there this weekend. Thankfully we were really fortunate and were able to host some good meets and got some things done we had to get done. This group really flipped a switch and decided it was time to get that feel of competition back."
On the women's side, defending indoor triple jump national champion Onaara Obamuwagun comes in ranked first in the country in the triple jump, soaring 43' 10.75" on Jan. 29 in Levelland. Freshman Joniar Thomas is second in the pentathlon with 3291 points, while freshman Rosemary Chukwuma is second in the 60 meters, posting a time of 7.35.
"Our talking point has been and will continue to be, everyone that is getting on that bus we need to go win a title," Vance said. "There is nobody that is going to travel with us that is not someone who we are going to need to win. The last title we won was by two points, and we have two teams who can go up there and win, and we need everyone to go do what we need them to do."
