South Plains College Head Rodeo Coach Kerry Doster enters his sixth season at the helm of the Texan and Lady Texan rodeo program. He has guided South Plains to some of their best seasons in school history.

This past season the Texan rodeo team finished eighth in the Southwest Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA), while the Lady Texans finished in ninth in the region.

During 2013-14, Doster coached Shay Spitz who qualified and competed in the barrel racing and breakaway roping events at the 2014 College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyo.  Spitz went on to finish third overall in the all-around and fourth in the barrel racing. Doster’s Texan squad that year finished third in the team standings in the Southwest Region while Ty Willick and J.W. Ery both qualified for the CNFR in steer wrestling. The previous year Willick was the 2013 Southwest Region Champion in steer wrestling.

Before coming to South Plains, Doster served as the head coach of the Sul Ross State University rodeo team from June 1996 until accepting his current role prior to the 2010-11 school year.

Doster is ambitious and sees no reason the Texan and Lady Texan programs cannot elevate to new heights.

“Our expectation is to win the men’s and women’s regional title with hopes of a title at the College National Finals Rodeo,” states Doster.  “The administrative staff at South Plains College has given the rodeo program the resources and tools to be successful.”

Doster’s career in college rodeo began when he became a member of the Weatherford College rodeo team from 1992-1994. After graduating from Weatherford Doster transferred to Sul Ross where he continued to compete in the saddle bronc, bareback, and steer wrestling events until he graduated with a degree in Ag Business in 1996. Doster completed a masters of science degree in 2009, also from Sul Ross.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Doster was a member of the PRCA from 1994-2004 while competing in saddle bronc and steer wrestling. He still competes in steer wrestling and team roping, in addition to training horses in his spare time.

Doster and his wife, Lacey, reside in Levelland and have one daughter, Kellyanna.
