SPC Dominates Levelland Invitational

Levelland—The South Plains College men's and women's cross country teams produced a strong showing at the South Plains College Invitational meet on October 23 in Levelland.

The men's team, led by Hassan Abdi and Kelvin Keter, took home a first place finish after combining for a total team time of 2:07:37.54 in the 8k run. Hassan finished first in a group of 39 total runners, with a final time of 24:15.09.
 
Keter finished third with a time of 25:02.28, while Nicholas Rotich took fourth after finishing with a time of 25:27.21. Jose Silva took fifth for the Texans, while Atem Akok finished in eight place.
 
McMurry finished in second place overall with a total team time of 2:21:17.99, followed by University of the Southwest and Odessa College.
 
In the women's 5k event, the Lady Texans placed second with a team time of 1:42:41.54, finishing just two minutes behind New Mexico Junior College for the top spot.
 
Sasha-Gay Whyte placed fourth overall in a group of 39 total participants with a time 19:19.51, averaging just over six minutes a mile.
Kassidi Jones took ninth for the Lady Texans, and Heather Maldonado finished 13th. 
 
The Texans and Lady Texans will have their next competition when they travel to the Region V Championships in Roswell, New Mexico next Saturday, October 31.
