South Plains Cross Country Places First, Fourth In New Mexico

New Mexico—The South Plains College men's and women's cross country teams produced a strong showing at the New Mexico Junior College meet October 9th at Harry McAdams Park.

The men's team, led by Hassan Abdi and Kelvin Keter, took home a first place finish after combining for a total team time of 2:05:18.13 in the 8k run. Hassan finished first in a group of 74 total runners from eight different schools, with a final time of 23:51.11, averaging 4:47.9 a mile.
 
Keter finished third with a time of 25:08.36, while Nicholas Rotich took fourth after finishing with a time of 25:17.69 for the Texans. Deric Martinez finished in fifth place for South Plains, and Jose Silva took sixth.
 
Lubbock Christian finished in second place overall with a total team time of 2:15:19.94, followed by Ranger College and Eastern New Mexico.
In the women's 5k event, the Lady Texans placed fourth with a team time of 1:45:58.08, finishing just six minutes behind Eastern New Mexico for the top spot.
 
Sasha-Gay Whyte placed sixth overall in a group of 69 total participants with a time 19:43.53, averaging just over six minutes a mile.
The Texans and Lady Texans will have two weeks off before their next competition, when they are set to compete at the South Plains College Invitational in Levelland on October 24.
