WEATHERFORD, Texas - The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams opened their spring schedule competing at the Weatherford College rodeo March 4-6 with the SPC women finishing second as a team. The Lady Texan performance, led by the trio of Carley Richardson, Tally Owens and Brittany Bell helped boost the teams overall standings in the Southwest region to first place as of March 8 with 1,635 points.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Seymour native and former SPC Texan tie-down roper Adam Gray is currently in fifth place after six rounds of competition in the tie-down roping event.

Gray was tied for third after his first round time of 7.8 seconds, but struggled in rounds two and five with times of 16.9 and 12.2 seconds. Gray attained marks of 8.9, 8.2 and 8.1 seconds in rounds three, four and six, respectively.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Adam Gray, a former member of the South Plains College rodeo team has began competition at the National Finals Rodeo in his marquee event of tie-down roping. After one round of competition Gray sits in a three-way tie for third place with a time of 7.80 seconds.

Gray, a native of Seymour, Texas, is ranked fourth in the world, according to the latest PRCA standings, in the event and has earned over $94,000 in 2009.

Some of Gray's 2009 accomplishments include winning the Sikeston (Mo.) Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo, Lewiston (Idaho) Roundup, Goliad (Texas) County Fair PRCA Rodeo, and the Cowboy Capital of the World Pro Rodeo in Stephenville, Texas.

LUBBOCK, Texas - The South Plains College rodeo teams have continued to be successful at Texas Tech, advancing five to tonight's final events scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Lady Texans Carley Richardson and Haley Nelson will compete in the final round of the barrel races. Richardson's first round time of 16.39 seconds is good for second place in the first round while Nelson enters the final with the seventh fastest time of 16.54 seconds.

Brittany Bell will represent SPC in the goat tying competition as she enters the final round in ninth place after securing her goat in 9.2 seconds in the Saturday morning's slack. Former Lady Texan and current Tarleton State cowgirl Cassie Vierstra will also compete in the final. Vierstra posted a time of 8.8 seconds in round one Friday evening and is currently in sixth position.

Bell and Vierstra will also compete in breakaway roping. Bell's first round time of 2.2 seconds is the second best in the competition, while TSU's Vierstra's time of 2.8 seconds is sixth best entering the final round.

In bull riding, Ben McPherson rode ‘Fireman' to a first round score of 76 to qualify for the final. McPherson's first round score is currently ninth best.

The final round of competition in the Texas Tech rodeo is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Texas Tech equestrian center.
