[Track and Field] SPC track teams begin season at Tarleton

The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan track and field teams begin their outdoor season today at the Tarleton State Invitational. Field events begin at 12 p.m. and running begins at 1 p.m.

The Tarleton State Invitational is the first meet of the season and begins the road to defend NJCAA outdoor titles both the Texans and Lady Texans won last season.

[Rodeo] SPC Rodeo Opens Spring Schedule at Weatherford

WEATHERFORD, Texas - The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams opened their spring schedule competing at the Weatherford College rodeo March 4-6 with the SPC women finishing second as a team. The Lady Texan performance, led by the trio of Carley Richardson, Tally Owens and Brittany Bell helped boost the teams overall standings in the Southwest region to first place as of March 8 with 1,635 points.

LUBBOCK, Texas - After advancing to their fourth Region 5 championship final in five years, the South Plains College Lady Texans hoped to do something they have not since the 2004-05 season and advance to the NJCAA national tournament in Salina, Kan. South Plains came up on the wrong end of a 68-59 final versus No. 4 ranked Midland College.

LUBBOCK, Texas - The South Plains College Lady Texans (20-9) are one game away from advancing to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament after defeating the Temple College Lady Leopards (21-6) 57-55 in the semi-final round of the Region 5 tournament held at Lubbock Christian University's Rip Griffin Center. Coach Wyatt's squad will face the winner of the 7 p.m. matchup featuring NJCAA No. 4 ranked Midland College and Collin County Community College.

LUBBOCK, Texas - The South Plains College Lady Texans could not have found a better game to get revenge against McLennan Community College for the defeat they handed to SPC on December 7^th by way of a buzzer beating half-court shot. If that had happened today, SPC's season would be over. Instead they escaped the Rip Griffin Center with a 64-61 victory and a spot in the Region 5 semi-final tomorrow at 5 p.m. against either Odessa College or Temple College.

LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2009-10 season came to an agonizing end for the SPC Texans (18-11) when they fell to No. 24 ranked McLennan Community College (27-4) 74-70 during the first round of the NJCAA Region 5 tournament held at Lubbock Christian University's Rip Griffin Center. The Highlanders are the No. 1 seed from the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference and will face Midland College Saturday at 12 p.m. in the semi-final round.

[Texans] Texans and Lady Texans Gearing Up for Region 5 Tournaments

The regular season is in the books but the Texans and Lady Texans of South Plains College are not finished playing basketball as both have qualified for the Region 5 tournament held March 4-7 at Lubbock Christian University's Rip Griffin Center.

The tournament begins Thursday, March 4 with the Texans (18-10, 8-6) drawing No. 24 ranked McLennan Community College (26-4, 12-2) to open the tournament. McLennan is the No. 1 seed from the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conferene (NTJCAC), while the Texans enter as the No. 4 seed from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC).

Coach Wyatt's SPC Lady Texans (18-9, 9-3) enter as the No. 2 seed from the WJCAC and will face McLennan Community College (18-11, 12-4), the No. 3 seed from the NTJCAC. The two teams squared off on December 7, with McLennan squeaking by SPC 55-53.

The Lady Texans and Highlassies are scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip-off on Friday, March 5 and are fighting for a shot at either Odessa or Temple in the semifinal game Saturday at 5 p.m.

[Men's Basketball] Texans Rout New Mexico JC 80-50

HOBBS, N.M. - The South Plains College Texans (18-10, 8-6) jumped out to an early 9-1 lead in the opening three minutes of their contest against New Mexico Junior College (16-14, 3-11) thanks to three 3-point field goals, one by Josh Orta and two courtesy of Bo Ingram, to begin the game. The Texans never looked back, routing the Thunderbirds by 30 points, 80-50.

Bo Ingram led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-9 from beyond the tree point arc. Khaliq Gross and Myles Walker added 12 points each.

With the victory the Texans had a chance to move to third place in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) standings, but needed No. 2 ranked Midland College (28-2, 12-2) to knock off Odessa College (23-7, 8-6). That did not happen as Odessa upset the Chaparrals 74-67, sending the Texans to the Region 5 tournament, held March 4-7 at Lubbock Christian University, as the fourth seed from the WJCAC. The Texans will face the No. 1 seed from the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 4.

Possible opponents for the Texans include No. 24 McLennan Community College (25-4, 11-2), Collin County CC (23-6, 11-3) or Grayson College (22-7, 10-3). McLennan hosts Grayson on Saturday, February 27 at 4 p.m. and can clinch the No. 1 seed with a victory. A Grayson victory, however, would complicate things as it would force a three way tie for the championship with each team splitting contests amongst each other.

[Women's Basketball] Lady Texans Clinch Second Place in WJCAC withVictory Over NMJC

HOBBS, N.M. - The South Plains College Lady Texans (18-9, 9-3) have clinched second place in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) after defeating New Mexico Junior College (16-13, 7-5) 57-44 Thursday night. The SPC women will face the No. 3 seed from the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 5. With one game remaining, McLennan Community College (17-11, 11-4) is in third place in the NTJCAC, with Cisco College (20-8, 10-5) lurking a game behind.

Trailing 27-26, the Lady Texans opened the second half on a 6-0 run and held NMJC scoreless until TJ Hart broke the Lady T-Bird drought seven minutes into the second half to make the score 32-29, sparking a 9-0 run to help NMJC retake the lead, 36-32.

SPC would go on to dominate the remaining ten minutes of the contest, outscoring NMJC 25-8 to return to Levelland with the victory.

Sophomore Sajoyia Griffin scored a game high 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting, while playing all 40 minutes of the contest. Freshman Kelsey Canavan recorded her eleventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 16 rebounds. This is Canavan's fourth in conference play.

[Texans] Texans and Lady Texans End Regular Season at NMJC

The South Plains College Texans and Lady Texans will travel to New Mexico Junior College tomorrow to face the Thunderbirds and Lady T-Birds in the regular season finale for both schools. The SPC men and women both have a lot on the line in their final WJCAC contests of 2010.

The Lady Texans (17-9, 8-3) look to hold on to second place in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) standings as they currently hold a one game lead over New Mexico JC (16-12, 7-4) who has strung out three consecutive victories.

Coach Steve Green's SPC Texans (17-10, 7-6) need a victory over the Thunderbirds (16-13, 3-10) and an Odessa College loss to claim third place in the standings. The Wranglers face the No. 2 ranked team in the NJCAA tomorrow night when they host Midland College (28-1, 12-1).

The women are set to tip-off at 5:45 p.m. MST and the men's action will begin at 7:45 p.m. MST and both games can be heard live on KLVT 1230 AM and www.hprnetwork.com.

[Men's Basketball] Sophomores lead SPC to 89-61 victory over NMMI

LEVELLAND, Texas - Sophomore Khaliq Gross continued having a hot hand when he tallied 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field in an important 89-61 victory over the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos. The win keeps the Texans (17-10, 7-6) in line for a berth to the Region 5 tournament held March 4-7 at Lubbock Christian University's Rip Griffin Center.

Sophomores Bo Ingram, Tramar Sutherland, Myles Walker and Gross were each playing their last game in the Texan Dome and all went out in style. Ingram complimented Gross' 23 points with 20 of his own, while Sutherland also scored in double figures with 13 points. Walker added 9 points.

The Texans are now tied with Odessa College (22-7, 7-6) who fell to third ranked Howard 59-50 tonight in Big Spring. The Texans can capture the third spot from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference with a victory at New Mexico Junior College on Thursday along with an Odessa loss to second ranked Midland College (28-1, 12-1).

South Plains College is scheduled for a 7:45 p.m. MST tip-off with the Thunderbirds on Thursday, February 25 in the regular season finale. The game will be aired live on KLVT 1230 AM and live stats will be available at www.spctexans.com.

[Men's Basketball] Texans Host NMMI in Final Home Contest of 2010

The South Plains College Texans (16-10, 6-6) will host the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos (8-18, 1-11) on Monday, February 22 in what will be the final home game for SPC sophomores Bo Ingram, Tramar Sutherland, Khaliq Gross, and Myles Walker. Tip-off is 7 p.m.

The Texans currently hold the fourth position in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) standings after winning a 73-67 nail biter at Frank Phillips this past Thursday. A win versus the Broncos and a Frank Phillips loss on Monday would guarantee the SPC men a spot into the Region 5 tournament held March 4-7 at Lubbock Christian University.

BORGER, Texas - Malik Smith's three point bucket with only 40 seconds remaining on the clock broke a 64-64 tie and sparked a 9-3 run that saw the South Plains College Texans (16-10, 6-6) gain sole possession of fourth place in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) and escape Borger with a 73-67 victory over Frank Phillips College (19-9, 5-7). The win also marks a milestone for Texan head coach Steve Green who earned his 400^th career coaching victory.

BORGER, Texas - Freshman post Kelsey made 12-of-18 shots on her way to scoring a career high 28 points to help lead the South Plains College Lady Texans (17-9, 8-3) to a 76-43 thumping of Frank Phillips College (18-10, 3-7). The Lady Texan victory keeps South Plains College in second position in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference standings with a 1 � game lead ahead of third place New Mexico, SPC's next opponent.

[Texans] SPC Basketball hits the road for showdown with Frank Phillips

The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan basketball squads will be departing for Borger, Texas Thursday afternoon for conference matchups with Frank Phillips College. The women are slated for a 5:45 p.m. tip-off and the men's action begins at 7:45 p.m.

The Lady Texans (16-9, 7-3) need a win to remain 1 1/2 games ahead of Odessa (21-5, 5-4) and New Mexico Junior College (14-12, 5-4) in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference standings. Odessa and New Mexico square off tomorrow.

Frank Phillips (18-9, 3-6) began the conference season 2-0 after defeating Midland College, ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA at the time and currently No. 4, and then beat Western Texas. The Lady Plainsmen have been on a slide since, losing 6-of-7 conference games.

The implications involving the men's game could include the final play-off spot from the WJCAC with the Texans (15-10, 5-6) tied with Frank Phillips (19-8, 5-6) in the conference standings. SPC head coach Steve Green is also looking for his 400th career coaching victory.
