[Track and Field] SPC Track Teams Sweep Team Titles for Fourth Straight Year

LEVELLAND, Texas - The South Plains College track and field teams broke out their brooms once again as they swept the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the fourth straight year. Only this time they did so within the comfort of their very own facility within the confines of the Texan Track and Field Complex.

The victory was the fourth consecutive for the Lady Texans and sixth in a row for the Texans.

LEVELLAND - The South Plains College Track and Field teams are scheduled to host the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the first time since 2008 when the Texan and Lady Texan tracksters look to defend their titles May 15-17 at the Texan Track and Field Complex in Levelland.

South Plains has swept both the men's and women's team titles the last three years when the meet was held in Hutchinson, Kan. and the Texans are in search of their sixth straight team championship. Head Coach Chris Beene hopes his teams can keep the streaks intact.

LUBBOCK - Track meets have been great days for head coach Chris Beene and his South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan Track and Field teams and Saturday's final regular season meeting at Texas Tech's Fuller Track and Field Stadium was no different as Beene's athletes appear primed to host and compete in the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after improving upon 31 season bests that are also NJCAA qualifying marks, claiming ten titles, breaking two school records, and ending the meet by blasting an 18 year old NJCAA record in the men's 4x400M Relay.

LEVELLAND - Sophomore Tymell Murphy became the sixth and final Texan to announce his destination for the 2012-13 school year, electing to play for new coach Richard Pitino at Florida International University in Miami, Fla. Pitino - the son of current University of Louisville head coach Rick Pitino - has enlisted Murphy as one of his first recruits to try to revive a program that won only eight games a season ago.

LEVELLAND - South Plains College held their annual Sports Awards Picnic Monday night outside of the Texan Dome where many awards were given to honor the accomplishments of the SPC student-athletes during the course of the year.

None were quite as significant as the award saved for the end when former Lady Texan basketbatball star Angie Braziel was honored as a recent inductee into the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) Hall of Fame for 2011.

LEVELLAND - The South Plains College athletics department will honor their student-athletes Monday beginning at 5:30 p.m. in their annual Sports Awards Picnic hosted outside the main entrance of the Physical Education Complex.

In the event of inclement weather the awards picnic will move inside the Texan Dome.

Each sport will be recognized for their accomplishments during the season and individual athletes will also be honored.

LEVELLAND, Texas - After much speculation, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men's Basketball Coaches Association released the 2011-12 Coach and Player of the Year Awards Thursday afternoon. As many expected, sophomore guard Marshall Henderson was named the Division I Player of the Year after helping lead the Texans to an unprecedented 36-0 season that was capped with an 81-68 victory over Northwest Florida State College in the NJCAA Championship game March 24.

LEVELLAND, Texas - Texan sophomore guards Derrell Edwards and Deshaunt Walker decided on a home for the next two years during a small ceremony in the T-Club lounge at the Texan Dome Monday afternoon as both signed National Letters of Intent. Edwards will attend High Point University (N.C.) while Walker will stay in Texas as he will attend Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.

The results from their latest meeting at Baylor's Michael Johnson/Dr. Pepper Invitational indicate that trend has continued as South Plains claimed seven men's and women's championships in addition to improving upon 14 season bests that also stand as qualifying marks for next month's NJCAA Championship meet hosted at South Plains College.

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The 2011-12 season came to an end for the South Plains College Rodeo teams as they wrapped up competition at the Tarleton State University Rodeo with one competitor in the evening's final round of action.

Sophomore Kelli Kindig was the lone SPC athlete qualifying for Saturday evening's short round after posting a time of 6.9 seconds during the performance Friday night. The time was tied for second best as the competitors entered Saturday's final, giving Kindig 45 points.
