Lady Texan rodeo team places second in Vernon, Mask moves to top of Southwest Region standings

VERNON — The South Plains College women's rodeo team earned a second-place team finish for the second time in as many weeks over the weekend at the Vernon College Rodeo at the Wilbarger County Event Center.

The Lady Texans added 160 points to their season total and currently sit second in the Southwest Region with 365 points. Howard College won the women's team title in Vernon with 170 points. The Texans placed five cowboys in the team roping finals Saturday night, earning an eighth-place finish with 140 points. Tarleton State won the men's team title with 485 points.

Emery Mask placed herself atop the Southwest Region standings in barrel racing with a second-place overall finish in Vernon. Mask turned in the second-fastest time in the long round with a 17.43, which she followed up with a 17.37 in the short round, capping the event with a 34.80 average, good enough for 160 points for the Lady Texans.

The Texans' Daryan Gonzales paired up with Mason Rust from Ranger College in team roping, as the duo placed first overall in the event, clocking a 5.8 in the long round and turned in a time of 5.2 in the finals, finishing with an 11.0 average, giving Gonzales 160 individual points. Stefan Ramone and Tee McCloud represented South Plains in the team roping finals, earning a fourth-place finish on the weekend. The duo clocked a 6.6 in the long round and a 5.9 in the finals to finish with a 12.5 average and 70 points each for the Texans.

South Plains' Kaden Prince earned a fifth-place finish in team roping, teaming up with Caden Clay from Tarleton State. The two would run a 6.5 in the long round and a 6.2 in the finals as Prince netted 50 individual points. Carter Roberson would also advance to the team roping finals, competing with Zant Lewis of Ranger College. The pair clocked a 7.3 in the long round but missed in the finals, placing 10th overall.

The Texans and Lady Texans will be off next weekend before returning to action Oct. 15-17 at the Clarendon College Rodeo, followed by a trip to Lubbock for the Texas Tech University Rodeo Oct. 29-31.
