Cayla Petree tabbed as WJCAC Co-Coach of the Year, WBCA National Coach of the Year Finalist

LEVELLAND — After leading the South Plains College women's basketball team to one of the most successful seasons in program history, Lady Texan head coach Cayla Petree was named the Western Junior College Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year, as well as a finalist for the United States Marine Corps Women's Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year.

Petree has guided the Lady Texans to a 28-4 record this season, including a 12-2 mark in the WJCAC. For their efforts, the Lady Texans secured one of eight at-large bids to the NJCAA Women's Basketball National Tournament where they will play as the No. 10 seed against No. 23 Harford on March 18 in Lubbock.

Petree has put together one of the top rosters in the country which ranks top 10 nationally on both ends of the floor. Averaging nearly 80 points per game, the Lady Texans rank third in field goal percentage with a 48.1 percent clip, and fifth in the NJCAA as the Lady Texans are giving up just 51.5 points per game.

Four members of Petree's squad earned conference and regional honors following the regular season, including second-year guard Gabbie Green who was tabbed as the Most Valuable Player in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference as well as the Region 5 Player of the Year.

Now in her fourth season at the helm of the Lady Texans, Petree has amassed a 93-34 record in Levelland as she looks to guide the Lady Texans to their first-ever national title in Lubbock.
