AUSTIN—The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams put themselves in contention to prove worthy of national recognition on day three of the 2017 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Meyers Stadium on Saturday.
And that they did.
The Texans' 4x400 relay team comprised of Junior Charles, Rayan Holmes, Okeen Williams and Montel Hood took third overall with a final time of 3:07.60. The Lady Texans' 4x400 relay team also earned a top 10 finish as Latriceia Smith, Natassha McDonald, Mauricia Prieto and Agnes Abrocquah placed eighth with their time of 3:42.14.
Laquan Nairn entered Saturday as the top long jumper in the NJCAA. He proved worthy of that notation as the sophomore from the Bahamas soared 25' 8.25" to capture third overall. Texas Tech's Charles Brown took first with a mark of 26' 8.5", while Texas A&M's Will Williams placed second with a mark of 26' 1.5".
Day 2 highlights:
William Watson got things rolling for the Texans with a 10th place finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line at 14.10. The Lady Texans' 4x400 relay team comprised of Latriceia Smith, Mauricia Prieto, Natassha McDonald and Agnes Abrocquah took fifth with a time of 3:41.20, qualifying for the finals on Saturday.
The Texans' 4x400 relay team will also compete in the finals on Saturday as Junior Charles, Rayan Holmes, Okeen Williams and Montel Hood placed fourth with a time of 3:10.10. After claiming the top mark in the men's javelin at UTEP last weekend, Adrian Williams placed 10th on Friday with a mark of 209' 9". Ioannis Kryiazis from Texas A&M took first with a throw of 288' 9", while Missouri's Reinhard Van Zyl took second and Angelo State's Nils Fischer placed third.
Okeen Williams continues to progress as one of the top hurdlers in the NJCAA as the sophomore from Jamaica placed eighth in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.25.
2017 Texas Relays notes:

What's next: South Plains will be back on the road next weekend in San Angelo for the David Noble Invitational on April 8, followed by a trip to Hobbs for the Ross Black Invitational on April 15.
