Success has followed Ron Mayberry wherever he has gone and at every level of his coaching career. Much of that success came in the junior college coaching ranks.
Mayberry won over 800 games in his career as a head basketball coach with 386 of those wins coming at the junior college level.
He began his coaching career in 1962, and for 12 years coached consecutive winning seasons on the high school level. His first experience as a junior college coach came in 1976 when he was an assistant at Midland College. His first job as head coach came a season later at Odessa College where he guided the Wranglers through four winning seasons, advancing to the NJCAA Region V tournament three years in a row.
Mayberry left the JUCO coaching ranks for three years to become the athletic director and head basketball coach at Wayland Baptist University. He returned to junior college coaching in 1984 at Kilgore College. There he took the Rangers to a 25-5 season and was named Coach of the Year.
He moved on to South Plains College in 1985 and coached the Texans for eight years, posting an incredible record of 204-58. His 1991 team was ranked No. 2 in the nation all season, while his 1992 team finished fifth at the NJCAA national tournament.
After leaving South Plains, he had one more taste of junior college hoops from 1999-2001 when he coached the Howard College women's team to a record of 44-19.
In 44 years as a basketball coach, Mayberry never had a losing record at any school he coached (16 schools). He coached teams into the playoffs for 19 straight years and was named Coach of the Year 11 times including National Coach of the Year once. He coached in three different Texas All-Star games and coached and recruited 11 players that made it to the NBA.
He was an All-State player at Amarillo High School and went on to play at Texas Christian University where the Horned Frogs won two Southwest Conference championships.
Mayberry earned a spot in the WJCAC Hall of Fame in 2007.
