LEVELLAND – South Plains College is set to host their first ever NIRA rodeo March 21-23 when the Rink Bownds Memorial Rodeo begins with the first performance at 7 p.m. Thursday evening.

The event is named in honor of Rink Bownds, a local businessman and cowboy who passed away June 22, 2010, from injuries sustained when his horse fell while roping in San Angelo.

The SPC Rink Bownds NIRA event is the seventh of 10 rodeos in the Southwest Region.  The South Plains College men's team currently ranks third out of 15 teams entering their home competition and several Texans and Lady Texans are in the top 10 in their event standings.

In conjunction with the rodeo, the Mallet Event Center will celebrate their grand opening Thursday at 5 p.m., prior to the first performance.  At 6 p.m. Saturday, spectators will be in for a treat as there will be a live performance from the SPC Commercial music department before the final performance begins at 7 p.m.

Single day tickets are $8 each and three-day general admission passes are also available for $20.
