LEVELLAND - The South Plains College athletic department hosted their annual Meet the Texans event recently to introduce their athletic teams to the community. The event was once again a success with several hundred in attendance for the event and 12 cooking teams competing in the cook off and also supplying the food for the evening meal.
Rose Equipment/Bryant Electric won the cook off competition that was judged by former Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers along with Corky Oglesby and John Sims. The team was comprised of Rusty Rose, Jeremy Smith, Jeff Nunn, and Ricky Bryant who cooked smoked up some tasty ribs.
City Bank - comprised of Eddie Leamon and Denise Esqueda - finished second in the judging. The teams from Musslewhite Trucking, Oxy Permian, and McCutchin Construction tied for third in the event.
The judges each said it was a tough event to judge as everything was outstanding.
Other teams participating included Hockley County School Employees Credit Union, G&C Contracting, Submersible Pump Co., Sundown State Bank, Atmos Energy, Chem-Tech, and Big Bear Oilfield Services.
Texans begin season with top NJCAA ranking
Coming off an undefeated season a year ago, the Texans were recently picked as the top team in the NJCAA as they were voted No. 1 to begin the season as well as picked to win the Western Junior College Athletic Conference for a second consecutive season.
"We're honored to be selected (as the No. 1 team)," said Texan head coach Steve Green. "I think it speaks to the success we had this past season and also to the returning players from last year's team.
"It also speaks to the strength of our particular conference."
Green, who enters his 13th season at the helm of the Texans, will rely on his four returners to lead an otherwise very young team.
Devonte Smith and Yanick Moreira are returning starters who helped lead last year's 36-0 squad. The Texans also return Terrence Durham and Anthony Walker.
Smith will once again serve as the floor general as the team's starting point guard and Moreira will be both an offensive and defensive threat in the paint and is also very effective shooting from the perimeter. Walker will help Moreira beef up the inside while Durham will help relieve Smith at the point guard position while also playing side-by-side with Smith.
The Texans have their first test of the season when they travel to Odessa for a non-conference neutral court matchup with Region 5 foe and 2012 NTJCAC conference champion Ranger College at 3 p.m.
South Plains faced the Rangers in their season opener at Odessa last season, winning 81-66.
On Saturday, the Texans will face Monterrey Tech at 2 p.m., also at the OC Sports Center in Odessa.
Both games will be broadcast live over the internet at www.spctexans.com.
