VERNON, Texas - After a well deserved weekend off, the South Plains College rodeo teams will return to the arena beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 for a three day rodeo hosted by Vernon College.

Several SPC competitors will begin with the Thursday evening slack, including Dylan Wahlert who currently sits fourth overall in the Southwest Region bareback standings.

The rodeo will heat up Friday night during the 7 p.m. performance as several top-ranked individuals will compete, including Colt Cleavinger in bull riding as well as Ty Willick and JW Ery in steer wrestling.

Cleavinger will look to get back to his winning ways after not making the short go two weeks ago in Alpine. In the first rodeo Cleavinger won the long and short rounds to score 180 points and is now in a tie for first atop the region.

Willick and Ery shot up the standings in steer wrestling following dominant performances in Alpine. After sneaking into the Sul Ross short round, Willick moved all the way to third in the overall standings with 125 points by winning the short round and tying for second in the average. Ery came home with the buckle for winning the event and moved up to fourth with 115 points overall.

South Plains will look to continue the success they have seen in their first two rodeos by qualifying several to Saturday's short round in Vernon and maintain their presence atop the southwest region. Saturday's short round will begin at 7 p.m.
