ALPINE, Texas - The South Plains College Texan rodeo team has completed each of the preliminary rounds at the 67th annual Sul Ross State University Rodeo and have unofficially advanced six to the final short round that will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday evening in Alpine. Official results are determined by the official staff of the Sul Ross rodeo.
During Friday's second performance, Gagnon took the lead in steer wrestling with a time of 4.0 seconds. Three cowboys later his teammate, JW Ery, hustled to a time of 4.9 seconds.
Heading into Saturday's final performance, Gagnon's time lead's the competition while Ery enters in a tie for fifth.
The steer wrestling duo will be joined in the final by teammate Ty Willick who snuck in with a tenth best time of 5.9 seconds during Saturday morning's slack.
Following Friday's performance, Kyler Cator was one-of-15 who competed in bull riding. Cator rode to a score of 63, good enough to qualify for another ride Saturday night.
Wahlert and Cleavinger each competed Thursday night where Wahlert posted what was then a leading score of 70 points in bareback and Cleavinger rode to a score of 59 in saddlebronc. After everyone has competed, Wahlert will enter the final third and Cleavinger will head into saddlebronc eighth.
Kimberly Hendley narrowly missed advancing in goat tying when she competed Saturday morning, turning in a time of 8.7 seconds which was tied for 11th. Teammate Kipty Watt's time of 10-seconds in the event was 19th best overall.
