LONDON - South Plains College great Sally Kipyego looks to add a second Olympic medal when she returns to the track at 2:05 p.m. CDT in the finals of the 5,000-meter run. Kipyego claimed the silver medal one week ago on the first day of track and field competition when she placed second in the 10,000-meter run.
Kipyego qualified for the 5,000-meter finals when she finished third in her heat Tuesday with a time of 15-minutes, 1.87 seconds. She has a season best time of 14:43.11, fifth best in the world entering the Olympic Games.
Kipyego was a seven-time NJCAA Champion competing at South Plains College and in 2006 was the recipient of the Betty Jo Graber award. Following South Plains, Kipyego went on to win nine NCAA Championships at Texas Tech University.
Friday will wrap up competition for athletes with ties to SPC. Renny Quow and Andrae Williams are members of the 4x400-meter relay pool for Trinidad & Tobago and Bahamas, but it is unclear if they will compete. Quow qualified to compete in the 400-meter dash but was absent when the athletes lined up.
Highlighted by Kipyego, it has been an impressive showing for former Texan and Lady Texan track athletes as seven athletes were in London for the London Games.
NBC will provide the coverage and a live video stream is also available at www.nbcolympics.com.
