LEVELLAND, Texas - The South Plains College Texans improved to 2-2 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) play with a huge 75-60 win over No. 16 ranked Odessa College Thursday night at the Texan Dome. South Plains is now 13-6 overall.

Four of SPC's starting five scored in double figures, led by Greg Gainey who scored 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Malcolm Miller dropped in 15 points, while Brandon Thompson and Derrell Edwards added 14 and 12 points, respectively. Stanton Kidd was big off the bench with 11 points.

It looked like the Texans might put the game away early as they found themselves up by ten points, 23-13, with 8:03 to go in the first half of play. The Wranglers pulled as close three points before the Texans took a six point lead to intermission.

Odessa took their first lead of the second half at the 12:49 mark when Kevin Schaffartzik hit a jumper to make it a 41-40 game. Jermonte Bush converted two free throws and then Derrick Barden took advantage of Malcolm Miller turnover to give Odessa 45-40 advantage.

South Plains answered with a 10-0 scoring run that reversed the deficit. Odessa would pull to within two points with 6:50 to go in the game, but that is as close as they would get. Leading 54-52, the Texans went on a scoring rampage that put them ahead by as many as 18 points on their way outscoring their opponents 21-8 over the final minutes to cruise to a 15 point victory. The loss drops Odessa to 17-3 overall and 3-1 within the conference.

The Texans are scheduled to travel to Borger on Monday where they will take on Frank Phillips College at 7:45 p.m. The Plainsmen (11-9, 1-3) notched their first conference victory when they defeated New Mexico Military Institute 78-69 on Thursday evening.
