HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The South Plains College Texans and Lady Texans claimed four NJCAA championships, four runner-up finishes and advanced many more from the preliminaries to the finals scheduled for Saturday.Angelle Miranda ran the first leg of the women's 4x800 meter relay and handed the baton to Shakeeri Cole in fourth place.  Cole, last years NJCAA champion at 800 meters, quickly closed the gap on the leaders and took the lead.  Lorianne Pattee ran a strong leg to maintain the Lady Texans position and Lisa Forsberg anchored the relay to an NJCAA championship in a school record time of 9:01.66.

Dellon Williams dethroned his teammate as NJCAA champion in the triple jump when he leaped to 52-07.50 on his final attempt to take the championship from Blaise who was the leader at the time.  Blaise finished second with a best attempt of 51-05.75.  Ronson Small (49-09.75) finished fourth in the competition and the three SPC athletes combined to give the Texans 23 points in the event.

Colleen Felix, who was second in the women's triple jump last season, claimed the championship in 2010 and nearly broke the school record when she jumped to a career best of 42-10.25 on her third attempt.  Shaneika McRae (40-07.75) and Kia Wansley (40-04.75) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to give the Lady Texans 19 team points.

In the women's shot put, Kelly Closse successfully defended her NJCAA championship from last year when she finished with a best toss of 52-05.25 on her first attempt to win the event by over 8-feet.

Quincy Wilson added eight points to the Texan team score when he finished second in the men's shot put with a best throw of 54-11.50.  Wilson's teammate, Daniel Rodriguez, added one point with an eighth place finish.

Kadian Dunkley finished second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:40.49.

Tallam Kipruto added five points to the Texan team score when he posted a time of 9:29.34 for a fourth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

After Shawna Anderson and Janelle Redhead struggled to pass the baton on the first exchange, the Lady Texans rebounded with fine legs from Nicquel Thomas and Jura Levy to cross the line in 45.24 seconds, the quickest in the preliminary round.  The Lady Texans will compete in the 4x100 meter relay final at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Niko Williams-Richey, Isaiah Gill, Devin Hill and Rondell Bartholomew dipped under the 40 second barrier for the first time this season when they successfully got the baton around the oval in 39.96 seconds.  The Texan 4x100 meter relay team will enter tomorrow's final with the second quickest time.

Bartholomew then led the field in the 400 meter dash when he won his section in 46.12 seconds.  His teammates, Anton Kokorin and Troy Faulkner, finished 1-2 in the second section with times of 46.50 seconds and 47.14 seconds and the Texan trio enter Saturday's final with the top three times in the field.

Jura Levy's time of 11.80 seconds in the women's 100 meter dash is second best entering the final, but possibly even more exciting is the fact that she will have two teammates joining her as Janelle Redhead crossed the line with a time of 11.88 seconds and will qualify third while last years NJCAA runner-up, Shawna Anderson, will qualify with the sixth fastest time at 12.08 seconds.

Shakeeri Cole will have the opportunity to add a fifth career NJCAA championship and defend her 800 meter title as she easily qualified for the final when she crossed the line with a time of 2:13.31.  Cole will be joined by her teammate and South Plains College school record holder Lisa Forsberg who qualified with a time of 2:14.20.

Marcelis Lynch will be the lone representative for the Texans in the 800 meter run, but he leads the field entering the final with a qualifying time of 1:51.49.

Chante'sean White will enter the final of the women's 400 meter hurdles with the quickest time as she crossed the line in the preliminary round with a time of 1:00.62.  Harmony Phillips finished fifth in the preliminary with a time of 1:02.95.

The Texans just missed qualifying three athletes for the men's 400 meter final but settled for two with Isaiah Gill leading the way and winning his section in 51.99 seconds.  Stephen Emere crossed the line third in the second section with a time of 52.98 seconds and will enter the final with the sixth fastest time.  Kervin Morgan finished ninth overall with a time of 53.47 seconds.

The Lady Texans look primed to score big in the 200 meter dash as Redhead and Thomas enter with the two fastest times of 23.79 and 24.10 seconds, respectively.  Levy lurks close behind with the fourth quickest time of 24.34 seconds.

The Lady Texans and Texans ended the day by easily qualifying both relay teams for tomorrow's final to be held at 4:20 and 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.
