HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The 2010 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Track and Field Championships are underway and the South Plains College Lady Texans are on the board with six points, while the Texans have two upon the completion of day one.

Sophomore Kelly Closse finished third overall in the first of three events she will be competing in when she tossed the hammer 147 feet, 11 inches on her first attempt.  At the end of the first round she was leading the field, but she was unable to improve her mark and had to settle for third place and six team points.

In the men's 10,000 meter run, Anthony Pequeno ran a season best time of 31 minutes, 46.84 seconds to finish seventh and earn two team points for the Texans.
   
Stormy Smothers completed finds himself in 11th position at the conclusion of day one of the decathlon competition after posting marks of 11.66 seconds in the 100 meter dash, 20-04.25 in the long jump, 34-02.25 in the shot put, 6-01.25 in the high jump and 51.80 seconds in the 400 meter dash for a total of 3,273 points.  Smothers will begin day two at 9 a.m. Friday morning when he competes in the 110 meter hurdles followed by the discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and will conclude with the 1,500 meter run.

Friday will be a very busy day for both the Texans and Lady Texans as nearly every event will be represented by South Plains College.  Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. while running preliminaries begin at noon.
