
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan track and field teams competed at the New Mexico Invitational on May 1 and had another fantastic meet as SPC claimed eight first place finishes, 12 improved NJCAA qualifying marks and two school records. The meet is the final regular season road competition as South Plains College is set to host the SPC Invitational on May 8th before heading to Hutchinson, Kansas for the NJCAA championships May 20-22.
Janelle Redhead and Jura Levy both lowered the school record in the women's 200 meter dash when they dueled into a stiff headwind. Redhead, who first broke the record on March 27th in El Paso, came out slightly ahead again when she crossed the line first in 23.23 seconds. Levy clocked a time of 23.29 seconds for second place and Nicquel Thomas ran a season best time of 23.85 seconds to finish third.
Redhead, Thomas and Levy teamed up with Angelique Lykes in the 4x100 meter relay and the four Lady Texans improved the record they previously set at the Texas Relays when they got the baton around the track and across the finish line in 44.63 seconds.
Shakeeri Cole and Lisa Forsberg swept the top two spots in the women's 800 meter run as Cole won the event in 2:10.23. Forsberg crossed the line in 2:12.87 for second place.
In the men's 800 meter run, Marcelis Lynch ran a season best time of 1:53.42 to win the event, while teammate Robert Castanon also ran a season best and NJCAA qualifying time of 1:54.92 to finish third. Elijah Rollock finished fourth with a time of 1:55.79.
Chante'sean White dominated the women's 400 meter hurdle field when she crossed the line in first place with a time of 1:00.53, just missing her season best.
Anthony May cleared a season best height in the high jump when he soared to 7-00.25 to win the event.
The Texans dominated the men's discus when Quincy Wilson led a 1-2-3 sweep in the event with a throw of 167-02. Daniel Rodriguez and Quincy Wilson finished second and third with throws of 156-02 and 150-11, respectively.
South Plains College will now host the SPC Invitational on Saturday, May 8th which will be the final tune up before heading to Hutchinson, Kansas for the NJCAA Championships May 20-22.
