BIG SPRING, Texas - The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams traveled to Big Spring for the Howard College rodeo and not even record rainfall for the area could stop the fine performances.

Competition got underway Thursday night with the barrel racing and Clara McBane whizzed through the course in 17.39 seconds, the third fastest time of the night. Jessica Wahlert had the misfortune of knocking over the second barrel and finished with a time of 26.8 seconds after a five second penalty was assessed.

Katie Vierstra was the first competitor in the goat tying competition and her time of 11.5 seconds held up until Katie's sister and former Lady Texan, Cassie Vierstra, rode out and clocked a time of 10.0 seconds for Tarleton State.

Tally Owens and Schelli White each failed to record a time in breakaway roping, but they were not alone as 30-of-42 competitors failed to record a time Thursday night.

In bull riding, Stuart Dill was bucked early and was unable to record a score.

Barrel racing began Friday mornings slack and SPC was represented by Brittany Bell, Michelle Mitchell and Tally Owens. Mitchell had the fastest time of the three at 17.71 seconds which places her 13^th overall in the field. Owens and Bell completed the races with times of 18.55 and 19.09 seconds, respectively. McBane now stands fifth with a strong chance at making Saturday's final.

White and Coby Auclair competed in goat tying Friday morning and turned in times of 14.7 and 17.2 seconds.

Teaming up with Texas Tech's Jay Manning, Jeremy Buhler is seventh after a round of team roping as they finished in 7.3 seconds. Buhler served as the heeler.

Competition resumes tonight at 7 p.m.
