CAYMAN ISLANDS - South Plains College freshman thrower Quincy Wilson did not travel with the rest of his teammates to the Texas Relays this past weekend. Instead, he boarded a plane to the Cayman Islands to compete in the 39^th Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Games held April 3-5.

Wilson entered the discus throw on Saturday, April 3 as the record holder in the event and improved the record 24-feet on his second attempt with a toss of 206-06.00. Entering the final three throws Wilson led his nearest competitor by over 15-feet and would maintain the lead until the final round when Chad Wright of Jamaica unleashed a monster throw to win the event and force Wilson to settle for second place.

In the shot put Wilson again set the early standard, this time on his first attempt when he came away with a toss of 61-03.00 to break a three year old CARIFTA record by more than a foot. Wilson would never relinquish his lead and he will return to SPC as a CARIFTA Games champion.

Wilson will rejoin his teammates when South Plains College competes in the Texas Tech Invitational on Saturday, April 10^th at the Linda and Terry Fuller Track and Field complex. Field events begin at 11 a.m. while running events start at 5:30 p.m.
