WEATHERFORD, Texas - The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams opened their spring schedule competing at the Weatherford College rodeo March 4-6 with the SPC women finishing second as a team. The Lady Texan performance, led by the trio of Carley Richardson, Tally Owens and Brittany Bell helped boost the teams overall standings in the Southwest region to first place as of March 8 with 1,635 points.


Richardson finished third overall in the barrel racing competition after she earned a total of 100 points. Richardson began the competition in fifth place after finishing the long round with a time of 17.87 seconds. Richardson's short round time of 17.72 seconds in the short round moved her to third place in the competition, earning 40 points in the round and 40 more for the average.

Bell began with a strong performance of 7.8 seconds in the first round of goat tying to begin the competition in second place and earning 50 team points, while Owens finished the opening round tied for seventh.

Owens put on a performance in round two with a winning time of 7.8 seconds, earning 60 points for the round. Her combined time of 16.4 seconds for the two rounds finished second among all the competitors to earn 110 total team points and finish second in the competition. Bell finished the event in sixth place with 60 points.

Ben Ramey earned 140 points and finished second overall in steer wrestling. Ramey began by winning the long round, pinning his steer in 4.3 seconds. His time of 5.2 seconds in the short round was good for fourth place; while his combined time of 9.5 seconds earned was good for second place overall.

The Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams will continue their spring schedule when they travel to Odessa March 25-27 for the Odessa College rodeo.
