LEVELLAND, Texas - Sajoyia Griffin had another big night for the Lady Texans as she scored 18 points in 39 minutes, while teammates Kelsey Canavan and ToiEasha Cooper also had double digit nights with 16 and 14 points to lead South Plains College (13-7, 4-1) to its third straight victory and sole possession of first place in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference standings. The Lady Texans are ½ game ahead of Midland College (3-1 WJCAC), who did not play tonight.
The first half was a wild one that featured six lead changes and nine tie scores, the final tie coming with just under three minutes remaining in the half. At that point the Lady Texans went on a 6-1 scoring run to head to the locker room with a 36-31 lead.
Frank Phillips fought back in the second half and got as close to one point, 38-37, seven minutes into the half. SPC would then lead by as many as eight points before the Lady Plainsmen again made it a one possession game, 61-59 with only 26 seconds left. A Lady Plainsmen foul sent Griffin to the charity stripe, where she was 10-of-11 for the game and sank both shots to make it a two possession game.
Frank Phillips would not threaten SPC again as the Lady Texans went on to win 67-59.
The South Plains College women will return to action in one week when they face New Mexico Junior College at 5:45 p.m. in the Texan Dome on Homecoming. The Lady T-Birds (11-10, 2-2) defeated Odessa College 66-60 tonight in Hobbs, N.M. and face Frank Phillips on Thursday.
