ODESSA, Texas - Sophomore guard Sajoyia Griffin just missed a double-double en route to another great night as she helped lead the South Plains College Lady Texans (12-7, 3-1 WJCAC) to a 54-53 victory over NJCAA 14th ranked Odessa College (18-2, 2-1). Griffin finished the game with 18 points and nine rebounds.

The first 3 ½ minutes looked bleak for SPC as Odessa jumped out to an 11-2 lead. Griffin then made the first of her five three point buckets to spark the Lady Texans to an 11-2 scoring run of their own to tie the game at 13 points each.

Although the Lady Wranglers would reclaim the lead and stretch it to seven with under 10 minutes to go in the half, South Plains College clawed their way back into the game once again and went into the locker room with a five point lead, 30-25.

Griffin then opened up the second half with a bang by nailing another three in the first 45 seconds of the second half to give SPC their largest lead of the game, 33-25.

Odessa was not ready to concede defeat, however, and they answered with a 9-0 scoring run that gave them a one point advantage, 34-33. The Lady Texans answered with a 6-0 scoring run and would stretch the lead to seven before Odessa forced the sixth tie of the ball game with just over six minutes remaining.

With only 17 seconds remaining on the clock, SPC clung to a one point lead. A foul by Kelsey Canavan with nine seconds to go gave Odessa a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead as it sent Odessa's Towanda Sutton, who to this point had made 3-of-4 attempts, to the charity stripe. Sutton missed both attempts and Odessa fouled Canavan, who also went to the line and missed.

As an Odessa player brought the ball up the court with only seconds remaining, SPC's Lorie Romaine picked up her second steal of the night and helped the Lady Texans seal the victory, 54-53.

The Lady Texans will return to action on Monday, January 25th when the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen who are 15-4 overall on the season and 2-1 in WJCAC play. FPC lost tonight to Clarendon College 107-88.

Best Western South Plains Inns and Suites is the sponsor of Monday's game versus Frank Phillips and they have donated a 32-inch Vizio flat screen television that will be raffled off.
