LEVELLAND - The South Plains College Lady Texans are now 3-0 after defeating the Lady Mavs of Northern Oklahoma College 81-69 on the final day of the 2009 Breakfast Rotary Classic, thanks in large part to a 12-0 run to begin the game and the dominance down low of SPC post Kelsey Canavan.
Canavan scored six of the Lady Texans first 12 points to help the Lady Texans gain that early 12-0 advantage. The Lady Mavs eventually gained their composure and got as close as one point twice in the first half. However, the Lady Texans closed the first half much like they started with an 11-0 run to head to the locker room with a 36-24 lead. Canavan scored four more points during that stretch, ending the half with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Texans and Northern Oklahoma played very even the entire second half, with SPC leading by as many as 18 points, but not by fewer than eight points and won by 12, 81-69.
Canavan had a big day for the Lady Texans, finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Four other Lady Texans scored in double figures for the afternoon, led by Sajoyia Griffin who had a game high of 18 points and also added six rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Christen McLee finished with 14 points, while Jasmine Taylor and Teysha Matthews score 10 points each.
Also for SPC, Lorie Romaine scored eight points, ToiEasha Cooper added five, and Ashlyn Green scored one point.
The Lady Texans are scheduled to travel to Tuscon, Arizona next weekend and will play the Tuscon Sol at 1:30 p.m. Friday, November 13 and Pima College at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 14. Both games will be played in the Mountain time zone.
